“Lift your voices high, as you multiply…”

Picture

Today is a reminder to sing and dance!

Incorporating movement in learning helps with engagement and retention. Have you heard of NumbeRock?
The greatest thing you can continue doing for your kiddos in Math during a long break like this…continue to use real life experiences using the various operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing). Also fact practice, practice, practice, and more practice! While, singing and dancing! This video has been one of my students’ favorite over the years and having a classroom of dancing skip counters is something I believe everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. Have fun!

Other Math ideas:
1. Story problems
Think of a farm with a variety of animals (like the illustration above!). Use those animals (legs, eyes, beaks) to help create story problems verbally and/or in writing. I.E. My cousins live on a Farm in Ohio, they have three rescued animals. One is a dog, the second is a duck, and the third is a hen. How many legs total? (Math Operation - Addition - 4+2+2=?) My cousins collect eggs every morning from their chickens! If each chicken lays 4 eggs and there are 12 chickens total, how many eggs will they have to eat? (Math Operation - Multiplication - 4X12=?) Story problems have good opportunities to challenge as you create so caregivers, this is a great time to differentiate depending on your kids' age. And, the words “groups of”, “times” and “multiply___by” are interchangeable!
2. Feel free to leave comments with other ideas!

    About the Author

This blog is dedicated to my families and students in isolation or quarantine with no online learning or structure yet. I'll have something new to share each day to motivate and celebrate learning at home, I hope this provides encouragement, connections and smiles from afar. May our students be motivated to guide their own learning, yet be curious to ask for direction during this time. Sending my love to all of my students and families!
